Among several contraceptive methods available now, copper coil is considered to be the safest and most durable way to control birth. But, before you look forward to obtaining coil fitting, it is vital to understand the procedure. Read on this blog to learn about the benefits of coil fitting in detail, covering topics like what to expect, how to prepare for the appointment and aftercare tips. This will help you feel informed, empowered, and confident before your appointment.

    What Is the Copper Coil?

Copper coil looks like a small, T-shaped device that is made of plastic and copper. This is meant to be inserted into the uterus to prevent unplanned pregnancies. This IUD releases copper ions which are poisonous to the sperms, thus making it difficult for them to survive or fertilise an egg. In contrary to hormonal contraceptives which are effective for only up to three years, copper coil offers protection for a longer period (around 8 yrs).

What You Should Know Before The Appointment?

    1. Educate Yourself about the Copper Coil

Before you visit the doctor, you must understand the copper IUD in detail, including its benefits and drawbacks. Some of them are as follows:

    Advantages

    • Long-lasting (up to 10 years)
    • Does not contain hormone, so there will be no unwanted physiological symptoms
    • Highly effective (around 99% efficiency)
    • Reversible results, thus, you can conceive normally after you remove the device

However, not everyone is eligible for using copper coil. This is because:

    • They lead to heavier, longer periods, especially in the initial few months
    • Cramping issues during and after insertion of the coil
    • A risk of expulsion or displacement

Therefore, it is crucial for you to have open discussion with the healthcare provider whether it is the correct choice.

    2. Schedule the Appointment Date Wisely

The best time to fit a copper coil is the menstrual phase. This is because the cervix is naturally more open and lubricated during that time, thus easing the process of insertion. It also ensures that you are not pregnant at the time of insertion. However, there is not strict regulation regarding the time for coil fitting. You can conveniently get your coil fitted at any phase of your monthly cycle, as long as there is no chance of pregnancy.

    3. Know Your Medical History

Before the appointment, be prepared with your medical history. This may include information about your:

    • Menstrual cycle
    • Any previous pregnancies and childbirths
    • History of pelvic infections or STIs
    • Allergies (especially to copper or latex)

All the above information is crucial to determine whether the copper coil is safe for you to use.

Essential Prerequisites for The Day of Appointment

Some women experience mild to moderate discomfort during insertion of the coil, while others report intense pain. So, it is better to be well-prepared.

    • Take over-the-counter pain medicines, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol at least an hour before the appointment (check with your doctor first).
    • Wear loose clothes to ease the insertion process.
    • Always have a sanitary pad or panty liner with you in case of spotting afterward.
    • Bring a close friend or family member along so he can safely drop you home off.
    • Attend the fitting appointment with a full stomach as this helps reduce the risk of fainting and nausea. Do not skip breakfasts especially.

Private Coil Fitting in London: What to Expect During the Appointment

Private coil fitting in London usually takes around 10–15 minutes to complete. However, the total duration of the appointment can be a bit longer as it involves consultation and aftercare advice. Here is a step-by-step guide for your convenience:

    1. Pelvic exam: You have to lie back on the examination table first. Then, the doctor will perform a pelvic exam to check the position and size of your uterus.
    2. Speculum insertion: A special instrument called speculum will be used to open the vaginal canal.
    3. Cervical preparation: The cervix will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution – this reduces the risk of infections. Sometimes, a local anaesthetic may be used to numb the area and minimise the discomfort associated.
    4. Measuring the uterus: A special procedure known as the uterine sound will be employed to determine the size and position of your uterus. This helps the doctor to choose a contraceptive coil that will fit appropriately into the womb.
    5. Coil insertion: After measuring the uterus, the doctor will insert the contraceptive coil through your cervix. This is done with the help of a thin, flexible inserter device. It is common to experience cramping and discomfort in the vaginal region and lower abdomen. However, this resolves shortly.
    6. Confirming the position: Once the coil is inserted into the uterus, the medical professional will perform an ultrasound scan. This helps confirm if the device has been positioned correctly. In case there is some discrepancy, readjustments will be needed.
    7. Trimming the coil strings: After successful insertion and positioning of the coil, the strings attached to it will be reduced to an appropriate length. Their main purpose is to maintain the coil’s position and assist in its easy removal (when needed).

    Aftercare Tips

After the coil fitting process is complete, you might experience symptoms like mild cramping, spotting, fatigue, etc. These signs are temporary and usually resolve within a short time. You can use a hot water bag or take painkillers to soothe your abdominal cramps. You must also avoid hardcore exercises, heavy lifting, or sexual activity for at least two days after the procedure.

    When to Seek Medical Help?

While complications are rare, you must consider seeking urgent help from your doctor if you face any of the following signs:

    • Severe pain or abdominal cramps
    • Heavy menses
    • Fever or unusual vaginal discharge (indicating possible signs of infection)
    • Pain during intercourse
    • Missing strings

    Conclusion

Getting a copper coil fitted for the first time can be challenging. However, with the right knowledge, preparation, and guidance, it can mark the first step towards taking control of your own reproductive health.
